i) What was Jerome’s real intention when he offered to pack?
His real intention was to Boss the job while George and Harris did the packing. But their agreeing to his packing irritated him.
ii) Was Bruno a loving and playful pet? Why, then did he have to be sent away?
Yes, Bruno was a loving and playful pet. He did a few tricks. He would wrestle or box and tumble. He would hold gun in the form of a stick and point at a person. However, It was becoming difficult to keep him at home. Therefore, he had to be sent away.
iii) How does the poet suggest that all people on earth are the same?
The poet suggests that a single human body breathes beneath different nationalities.
iv) Can a “simple jab of the knife” kill a tree? Why not?
No, it can’t. It is because the bark of the tree will heal on its own after sometime.
v) How did Prashant help the villagers?
Prashant is a teenager. He brings a large number of orphan children together. He puts up a polythene sheet shelter for them. He asks women of his village to look after them. He lays the children on the sand with utensils on their stomachs. The helicopters see them. Then they drop food items.
vi) What is Behrman’s masterpiece? What makes Sue say so?
Behrman’s masterpiece is the painted leaf on the wall. It has saved Johnsy’s life, though it cost him his own life. After looking at it, Johnsy gets a willingness to live. She is all right now. This makes Sue say that Behrman at last painted his Masterpiece in that leaf. It was a masterpiece in the sense also that it had saved Johnsy’s life.
vii) What gestures of his schoolmates touched the author’s heart in ‘A House is Not A Home’.
The schoolmates collected notebooks, clothes, tops and sweatsuits for him. People met him showed concern. These actions changed the author’s understanding of life and people. This all touched him emotionally. He made many friends that day.
Q.7 Answer ANY TWO of the following in about 120 words each.
i) ‘The Beggar’ has a beautiful message. It is that one can make one’s life a happy journey through work only. Describe how the author demonstrates this simple principal.
It is true that work is very important in making one’s life a happy journey. We must not shy from doing any work. As against it, begging takes one to nowhere. Lushkoff in ‘The Beggar” is a beggar and has a tendency to live off on others’ charity. Sergei pities him but he offers work to him. It is Olga who teaches him a great moral lesson through helping him. But finally it is him only who becomes self-dependent through work. The bigger, that is, Lushkoff, starts working at a notary and lives a dignified life. Sergei is amazed to know Lushkoff become so. However, it is Sergei, who makes him so by helping him get the work of a notary.
ii) After reading about Santosh Yadav and Maria Sharapova, would you say that some people are born great or do you think that it is the hard work which makes the person great?
It is not easy to answer such questions because greatness generally from a blending of both these things. Some children are certainly more talented than others. Yet these talents are like a newborn plant. Like the small plants, they need a proper atmosphere to grow. Unlike the plants, human children have to create this atmosphere for themselves.
No human attainment is cheap, least of all greatness in any walk of life, for greatness as its price and the price of greatness is always pain. We feel that these great people were in every way better than us and yet they suffered is always pain. We feel that these great people were in every way better than us and yet they suffered more than we did. So I would say that a mixture of inborn talent together with great determination and the capacity for suffering makes a person great.
iii) How did Gerrard outwit the Intruder and save himself?
The Intruder wanted to know a few things about Gerrard. In the process he told him a lot about himself. He told Gerrard that he was a criminal and a murderer. He had killed a police man. So the police were after him. He told him that he had come to murder Gerrard and life as Gerrard after him. Gerrard understood everything. He told the Intruder that he himself was a criminal. He had been a murderer himself and that the police were after him. He adviced the Intruder to run away with him. Then, he opened a door. But it was a cupboard. The Intruder was shut in it. Very soon he called the sergeant who arrested the Intruder.
